Hi, all. Yesterday, some residents of Richmond, Indiana assembled to see how well they could meet a particular "eat local" challenge: could they produce a meal for each other where all of the ingredients came from within 100 miles of their home? We called it the 100-Mile Radius Potluck, and you can see a video about the results here:

I've heard from some people that the first week was difficult. Farmers markets do not have an abundance of produce yet, although that will change in the next few weeks. Are you overwhelmed? On the verge of giving up? Tell us what you need help with. Also tell us your successes. Maybe you've found some things easier than expected.

Does anyone have experience canning with a pressure cooker canner? I have a Mirro 12 quart canner, but have not used it because I have not found anyone who has used one recently (my grandmother, at 90, was not so keen to volunteer!). A couple of us in my neighborhood are interested in learning if anyone is open to teaching.
Thanks, angie

Share your experiences this summer on vacation trying to eat local.
I'm in Key West, FL for this week and have had a great time with the challenge. Local grouper for dinner last night and the house we're staying in has all sorts of fruit growing in the yard. Paypaya for fruit salad tonite!

So my last few Saturdays have been really busy. My next few Saturdays are really busy. Farmer's Markets are usually on Saturdays. I've joined a CSA but they haven't started yet. Where can a person buy local except at a Saturday farmer's market? Do we have to go directly to the farms?

Hey there. I was so inspired after reading "Animal, Vegetable, and Miracle" that I would like to spend my summer working on an organic/natural farm (I'm a teacher.) Does anyone by any chance have any leads of any not too far from Indianapolis? Thanks!

In her book "Animal, Vegetable, Miracle" (p. 76), Barbara Kingsolver's husband Steven Hopp says that small farms are not only more environmentally responsible but also maximize profits. He claims that the reason they cannot stay in business is due to marketing. Supermarkets prefer to buy truckloads of vegetables from one operation rather than several smaller ones. How do we get the food from these smaller farmers to the customers that want to buy them? Let's hear your ideas.
