Eat Local Challenge

Sustainable Indiana 2016 Eat Local Challenge - Sustainable Indiana 2016

This June through August, Earth Charter Indiana and Indy Sustainable Food Alliance are challenging 100 families and individuals to derive more than 50% of their diet from locally-grown foods, that is, foods produced within 100 miles of their home. Tips, resources, recipes, links, and more will be provided to help you achieve this challenge. More importantly, we hope that you will share your challenges and successes with each other through online discussions.

Here's to good, healthy eating for you, your family, your community, and the planet!

How to Get Started

First, sign the pledge!

Second, figure out where to buy your food. Look on our "Organic and Local Farming Page" for farmers markets and CSA's (community-supported agriculture. Or go to "Resources for Eating Locally" for a list of grocery stores and restaurants. We are starting this challenge at the beginning of farmers' market season to make it a little easier for you. There are also home delivery services of locally grown food and local sections in grocery stores.
Tell us where you've been buying local food by taking our online poll to the right of this page.

For a handy mapping tool (100 mile radius from your zip code), click here.

Third, share your experiences in our discussion forums. Start a new thread at the bottom of this page..

ChrisHardie 100-Mile Radius Potluck in Richmond 0 Thursday, 9:58 AM EDT by ChrisHardie
Thread started: Thursday, 9:58 AM EDT  Watch
Hi, all. Yesterday, some residents of Richmond, Indiana assembled to see how well they could meet a particular "eat local" challenge: could they produce a meal for each other where all of the ingredients came from within 100 miles of their home? We called it the 100-Mile Radius Potluck, and you can see a video about the results here:

Enjoy!

I've heard from some people that the first week was difficult. Farmers markets do not have an abundance of produce yet, although that will change in the next few weeks. Are you overwhelmed? On the verge of giving up? Tell us what you need help with. Also tell us your successes. Maybe you've found some things easier than expected.

BarefootGardener Pressure cooker canning 3 Jun 5 2008, 8:01 PM EDT by arlaede
Thread started: May 29 2008, 11:40 PM EDT  Watch
Does anyone have experience canning with a pressure cooker canner? I have a Mirro 12 quart canner, but have not used it because I have not found anyone who has used one recently (my grandmother, at 90, was not so keen to volunteer!). A couple of us in my neighborhood are interested in learning if anyone is open to teaching.

Thanks,
angie

Share your experiences this summer on vacation trying to eat local.

I'm in Key West, FL for this week and have had a great time with the challenge. Local grouper for dinner last night and the house we're staying in has all sorts of fruit growing in the yard. Paypaya for fruit salad tonite!
