Context for Sustainable Indiana 2016
The difficulty of achieving sustainability on planet Earth is more than matched by the urgent necessity to “do or die.” In fact, many species have already died, more are dying every day and all living things are vulnerable to the onslaught of ecological degradation, resource wars, peak oil, extreme poverty and health pandemics. The good news is that people across the world are waking up and working to turn the tide toward a more livable future.Indiana is not generally regarded as a role model for progressive causes but could, for that very reason; make a considerable impact for good by becoming a national and world “leader” in the race to sustainability.
On this site you will find information about organizations and projects in Indiana that are already incorporating sustainable principles. These are the role models for sustainability that can inspire your organization or project.
What is Sustainability?
In a sentence, sustainability is living in a state of harmony and balance with each other and nature so that the entire interdependent web of life is perpetually healthy and prosperous.
The four core values of the Earth Charter (respect and care for the community of life, ecological integrity, social and economic justice, democracy, nonviolence, and peace) and its 16 principles outline the path to a sustainable future. The challenge facing us now is that the Earth’s carrying capacity is greatly overburdened and increasingly crippled by shortsighted human priorities. Add to that the erosion of economic equity, the neglect of family and community values, and a culture of violence. A perfect storm of devastation is gathering momentum.
